Why I'll be Rocking Baroque this Season...

It's just so glamorous isn't it..?
Printed, embellished or embroidered the pattern just looks so rich and beautiful. Besides, black and gold is one of my favourite colour combinations for the winter season; it's classic, elegant and festive! And this year's baroque trend definitely does it justice. Go full on baroque chick with a statement evening dress, or just add a subtle hint of history with an embellished clutch bag or alice band. I'm a self-confessed jean junkie so I'll be teaming a cosy printed sweater like the one below (Miss Selfridge-£43) with my Gok Wan black skinnies. I compiled a mood board using Polyvore of some beautiful baroque-inspired pieces, let it inspire you too.

Material Girl

Recently I was asked a question. One which wound me up deep in thought and in the end could only lead to one answer…

Every now and then my boyfriend and I like to play a little game; we take it in turns to ask each other any question we can think of- however deep, personal, shallow or ridiculous it may be. It’s a simple game but we’ve found out a lot about each other through playing it and it often leads to some quite in-depth discussions. Much like this one… We started playing last week on a day out to Thorpe Park as a way to pass the time during some of the painfully long queues, it began with the obvious ‘what do you like most about yourself, what do you like the least’ and, well, you get the gist. It was when we were taking a steady stroll back to the car, beaten by the rides and drained of adrenaline that he dropped this one on me:

“Apart from your family and friends, what is the best thing in your life right now..?”

He followed with “give me your answer and then I’ll give you a better one.” Intrigued by his mystique I immediately tried to think, the cogs were turning but I drew a complete blank. It’s not that I’m particularly unhappy at the moment, I’m simply in that ‘just got out of Uni have no job and am completely broke’ place. So really, my friends and family aren’t just the best things in my life, but essentially the only things, which to be honest, is OK with me. But of course I was curious to hear this “better” answer so had to come up with one of my own. After some careful consideration I thought back to the only other thing that makes me happy every day, is always there for me, has and always will be a huge part of my life. My answer of course, was…
“Fashion...”

His answer, the one set out to better mine was laughter. After all, what do you have if you don’t have laughter? But my point was this: what’s laughter without the people who create it? You can be entertained by a comedian, you can giggle at your favourite rom-com, but isn’t laughter empty without the ones you share it with? For that reason, I stood by fashion as being the best thing in my life right now. Do I sound superficial? To some maybe, but call me a material girl if you will; fashion is fun, makes me feel good about myself and the best part is, it’s eternal.
I cannot picture a day in the future - near or far - where fashion doesn’t count for anything. From way back to the  16th century Renaissance where whale bone waists and Farthingale skirts were used as a status symbol to the 60’s rebellion when youths started to adopt a more edgy style as a cry for freedom, fashion has always meant something. It means something to the designers who create it and it means something to me; a hobby, my degree and hopefully someday my career.

Today though, it simply meant a bit of fun for me and my mum as we scoured for bargains and wandered the floors of New Look and Next picking out new outfits for each other. The result on my end was an entire outfit for under £30, which as a bonus is topped off perfectly by my current favourite pair of flats. Now if that can’t make me happy I don’t know what can! So if you’re stuck trying to think of something - other than family and friends - that is always there for you and has the power to make you smile no matter your mood, look no further than your very own wardrobe, or at the very least your nearest high street.
